History
It has established a foundation as a leading department of the 21st century.

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Yonsei University was established in 1966 with the Department of Metallurgical Engineering and the Department of Ceramic Engineering in 1969. In 1980, it was moved to the Engineering Building, and in 1994, it was moved to the current Engineering Building No. 2, and it continues to develop. With the launch of the undergraduate system after 1997, it was integrated into the Department of Materials Science and Engineering along with Ceramic Engineering, introducing a variety of educational methods for the education/research sector and implementing research improvement through a research power-centered evaluation system.

It has established a foundation as a leading department of the 21st century.
By introducing the Engineering Education Accreditation System (ABEEK), which has been in effect since 2004, we are improving education at universities more systematically and efficiently, and furthermore, we have laid the foundation for nurturing engineers required by industry.

This department aims to play a leading role in the creative research of new applied technologies in line with the 21st century information technology society.

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering is developing into a research-oriented department with 29 full-time professors in charge of education and research, and 420 undergraduate students, 90 master's students, 80 doctoral
students, and 180 integrated graduate students.
As of 2006, in terms of publication of international research thesis, Yonsei University ranked 2nd among 11 majors and 3rd in terms of the amount of research funding received per professor.

This department aims to play a leading role in the creative research of new applied technologies in line with the 21st century information technology society by establishing a mid- to long-term development plan at the present time in the 21st century, as well as in nurturing advanced brains and technologies. By doing so, we intend to contribute to the improvement of national welfare technology and the internationalization of national technology.
